Women and children who leave an abusive
relationship can stay in a shelter for 90 days.
After that period, they need transitional housing,
where they can stay for up to two years.
As part of
our comprehensive battered women’s services,
Alternative House opened its residential
transitional housing program in July 1999 that
provides educational and vocational services to
former battered women and their children.
The facility is named after a former shelter
resident who was killed by her batterer in 1978.
The women residing at the House are provided
with assistance in developing independent living,
employment and life management skills.
This includes, but is not limited to, permanent
housing searches, GED training, specialized job
certification programs, additional time to save
money and gain life/employment skills to enter the
job market and live independently of government
assistance. Alternative House offers these services
directly or in collaboration with other local job
training agencies, vocational schools and the
local community college.
